This tool recommends a rule for calculating a position's EPC over the board. The decision tree at the right lists the series of positional criteria that are evaluated to select the EPC estimation method, then the selected method is broken down in detail on the left. Trainers may be developed for each individual EPC estimation method in a future version of this site.
The exact EPCs were computed from a one-sided bearoff database, and "Error" represents the difference between the over-the-board estimate and this exact EPC. This approach can estimate EPC for most "normal" positions to within +/- 0.5 pips, with some unusual positions reaching errors of +/- 1.0 or (rarely) even more.
All of the EPC estimation methods are based on Art Benjamin's Math Overboard articles in PrimeTime Backgammon: Fall 2022 (pippish positions), Summer 2023 (rollish positions), and Fall 2023 (special scrunched situations).
Rules for determing cube action from EPCs will also be a subject of future training materials.
